Chapter Fourteen

Bella was busy at the hardware store over the next few days, which she was thankful for. Ian and Carlos introduced her to Wyatt, Rafe, and their team the night before they left on their mission. Keeping busy kept her from thinking too much about where they were or what they were doing. It also helped to keep her mind off Evan.

There were always two men with Bella. They rotated the two-man teams and today was Wyatt and Rafe’s turn. She was surprised that there was a woman on their team. Her name was Kennedy Lee. Bella liked her spunky personality. Kennedy didn’t take any crap from the men and she gave as good as she got.

Bella liked all the members of Wyatt and Rafe’s team. They were tight knit, yet they never made her feel like an outsider. Each member was different, but they worked well together. They cooked and cleaned up after themselves, which Bella was grateful for. She helped when they let her. Most of the time she was shooed away and told to go find something else to do. Especially by Beaux Bordelon.

Beaux was an excellent chef and he’d taken over the kitchen. Apparently, there had been an incident involving another team member, Severt Morris. Whatever happened caused Beaux to institute a “no Severt in the kitchen” rule while he was cooking. Beaux and Severt wouldn’t talk about it, so Bella didn’t bring it up.

The little bell over the door jingled, and Bella walked to the front of the store to greet the customer. A man stood at the counter, his back to her. Bella could tell that he was tall, about six feet, with close-cropped brown hair. He was stocky but not fat, more like a fighter. He wore jeans and a T-shirt that was stretched taut over his back and shoulders. Obviously, the man worked out.

“May I help you?” Bella asked in her most polite voice.

The man spun around and Bella’s breath caught in her throat. The vibe the man was giving off was dark. One word popped into Bella’s mind. Dangerous. A frisson of fear inched down her spine and a cold shiver swept through her body.

Bella stood her ground and kept a smile pinned on her face. She didn’t move any closer and she looked to make sure she knew which way to run if she had to make a break for it. Where the hell were Wyatt and Rafe?

“Well, look who we have here. How’s it going, Bella?” the man asked.

“Excuse me? Do I know you?” she asked, trying to play it off as if everything were all right.

“No, we’ve never met personally, but Evan has told me all about you. His sweet, beautiful little Bella.” The man ran his gaze over her body and licked his lips. Bella felt as if she needed a shower after his indecent perusal of her body. This guy was creepy in the worst sort of way, but she wasn’t going to let him intimidate her.
